We had just shifted into a
new house. It was a lovely house with ample space in front and at
the back. I have always been fond of flowers and planned to convert
the free space into a garden. Gardening, to me, is very endearing
especially when the first blossoms begin to bloom all the sweat and
toil seem to have borne fruit.
However, if you want a
garden you need to plan carefully. You need to first decide what
type of garden you want. Will your garden house seasonal flowers
that provide a colorful trimming to your house? Or do you want a
green garden with assorted green plants like cactus and crotons that
are available throughout the year? Most people opt for a mix of both
but no matter what garden type you opt for, there are some basics
that you need to remember.
While selecting the plants
for your garden, take into consideration the climatic conditions of
the region. Some plants work better in one climate than the other.
Some require more rainfall while others need more sunshine.
Once you know which plants
you want for your garden, identify areas in the garden space for the
plants. Check the sunny and shady areas and place plants according
to their sunlight requirements. For instance, most seasonal flowers
require to be under direct sunlight for an extended period of time,
whereas, you can place the crotons in the shady areas. Therefore, it
is a good idea to plant seasonal flowers away from buildings and
taller trees because they block sunlight.
Even while planning for
plants near the house, keep some factors in mind. If you prefer
breezy, airy rooms with lots of sunshine, do not plant bushes or
bulky trees near windows as they can block the sunlight.
Finally, remember not to
leave out any other tit bits you would like to add in our garden.
For instance, you could have a winding pathway, some gazebos,
cobbled walk track or perhaps a bench or an arch. Sometimes creating
an uneven terrain at one end of the garden with spiked plants, some
water body with clay figurines only add to the beauty of the garden.
Another important point to
note is to identify the location of sewerage, electrical
installations, both above and below the ground, water pipes and
telephone lines so that there is no negative impact on the plants.
