In my
neighborhood, there is a community garden where people in the local area rent a
small plot of land and grow vegetables, flowers, or whatever they please. One
day when driving by, my daughter pointed to the community garden and exclaimed –
“poor farmers.” I asked her why she said that and she told me that one of the
other soccer moms explained to her and the other children that people (poor
farmers) use a community garden if they live in an apartment or otherwise don’t
have a yard of their own to plant and grow their vegetables.
I told my
daughter that those farmers were actually very rich. They plant the lovely
gardens to grow organic vegetables and enjoy the camaraderie of their friends
and neighbors as they plant their seeds and enjoy the fruits of their labor. I
explained that gardening is a luxury for those who can afford it and that it
therapeutic for the mind and the soul. If anyone wants cheap vegetables, they
can simply buy them from the discount market or the 99 cents store. But if
someone is truly fortunate enough to have a green thumb and to reserve a plot in
a community garden, they can enjoy the riches of being one with the earth and
experiencing growth from a seed. I’m not sure whether my daughter understood
or not, but now when we drive by the community garden, she exclaims “rich
farmer.” I hope to someday teach my daughter this lesson for herself with seeds
and plants purchased with coupons from Gurneys.com.
