Pardon me for saying this,
but the first time I visited cousin Ben’s new home I found it to be
rather stark. Sure it was squeaky clean, with the right wall colors,
and comfy sofas but something was amiss. I couldn’t put my finger on
it but it somehow left an indelible impression on my mind.
However, this time round
when I visited him things were different! The place had life – it
was warm and interesting and somehow much of my dear cousin’s
personality began to surface in the surroundings around. And then I
knew it – it had to be the curios that filled the earlier vacant
spaces.
Whether it was the reclining
Buddha from Thailand, the Tibetan prayer wheel, the wooden animal
carvings from Nairobi, the Nataraj from India or the special stone
carved fish from Mexico, they all seemed to enliven the whole house.
Curios have a special way
for lending warmth to a place. Not only do they enhance the
aesthetics of the surroundings, they also provide an effectively
point to start conversations! That’s right, I remember that time
when I was curious about the intriguing statuette on Dina’s
mantelpiece? And as I kept looking at the fascinating object,
someone offered to throw some light on it from behind. And that’s
how I met fiancé!
Curiosity is the keyword
here. Did you know that the word curio comes from the word
curiosity? Curios are interesting collectables or pieces of art and
I am guessing they stem from one’s curiosity of the object. You can
use one type of curio item or a blend of various kinds to give your
house the desired effect.
Some have a penchant for
dolls while others for bells. How do you display them? More
important where do you display them? Some collectors have the
advantage of an entire room to display their collectibles. However,
if you are one of those who has a space problem, the ‘where’
decision becomes even more critical.
In smaller homes, you can
display your collectibles in groupings around the house or in a
cabinet often called a curio cabinet. I personally prefer curios
placed at different locations in the house. And since you can’t have
several curio cabinets, try the following options:
Simple shelves at uneven heights on the wall. They are
simple, non obstructive, cost/space effective. The distance between
two shelves can depend on the type and size of the curio item.
Niche is another beautiful example of good usage of
space. A niche in today’s world corresponds to a recess in the wall.
Typically used to house statues, today niches are a popular choice
for displaying curios. However, you’ll be surprised to learn that
niches actually go back right to classical and Gothic architecture.
Many interior
designers/architects are now using the stepped wall effect.
This is particularly useful to provide a partition between rooms and
yet maintain an open, free flowing ambience. And because of it’s
structure, the ‘steps’ of the wall provide an ideal place to display
curios.
