While I love PetSmart.com, I’m still waiting for them to create magic solutions to my toddler vs. pet problems. My dogs tolerate and learned to love my toddler because she is a never ending buffet and source of food for them. Whenever she throws her food, baby spoon or baby bowl on the ground or across the room, I am thankful that the dogs are ready, willing and able to lick up the mess. The only problem with this symbiotic relationship is that my toddler likes to share food with the dogs back and forth. One lick for her, two licks for the dogs, and then one lick for her and so forth. It seemed a bit gross at first and I tried to stop it a few times. But my toddler would give me a gibberish scolding, stern look and finger wagging who seemed to be telling me to stay out of her business. I still remember the moment the alpha dog was determined in my house. Late one night I woke up to discover my dog and my toddler both sitting on my pillow and staring at each other face-to-face one inch away in a “face-off” for alpha dog status. I cautiously watched ready to stop the face-off at the first sign of any altercation. However, since this was a small dog, with a good disposition and missing a few teeth due to old age, I decided to let it play out and carefully watched. Eventually my toddler pushed the dog off of my pillow and the dog did not retaliate and thereby effectively conceded the Alpha Dog position to the new princess of the castle.
