Who can
resist the warm sunshine of California? The clear blue skies, the
sound of the breaking of waves, and the tall palm trees are all too
tempting to remain cooped up indoors. However, with a toddler at
home, it became quite difficult to go out too far to enjoy the
sunshine. And I am one of those who likes a bit of the outside every
now and then so I have got myself an awning. Every time I feel like
some fresh air and warm sunshine, I go out on the porch and stretch
my legs beneath the big awning.
These days
we have a full house. My sister was getting engaged and so the
family had descended upon us to participate in the event. Our place
was the obvious choice because of the location. Everyone just loved
the Californian weather. So we had my parents, aunts and uncles,
first cousins, second cousins and their children. It was like a
house on fire. Everyone seemed busy.
We were
planning on hosting the event outdoors. We had a lovely lawn laced
with a pretty pink sensation rose hedge. My mother did not believe
in hiring a party planner. She preferred to take charge herself. And
when she was in charge, guess who had to do all the running? So
there I was calling the caterers and the floral guys while my sis
whisked off to get herself ‘the’ gown with cousins in toe. I could
do with some help and I searched frantically for my husband to lend
a helping hand. I looked upstairs but he was not there. He was
neither in the kitchen nor the backyard and just as I was beginning
to get annoyed, I found him all curled up beneath the awning soaking
in the afternoon sun. I roused him up from his reverie and set him
off to collect the wines for the evening.
Finally,
it was dusk. Everything seemed to be in place. The lawn was
beautifully lit up and soon the guests began to arrive. The groom to
be looked handsome but so did my sis. She was all dolled up in a
gorgeous lilac gown. I turned to look at my mother. Her eyes were
moist with joy as she looked on fondly at her favorite daughter. The
party went off well. And when the last of the guests bade their
goodbyes, the family gathered under our big awning. It was
beautiful. We sat and talked of the by gone days and laughed at
Uncle Greg’s jokes. It was a touching picture of the entire family
bound under our big awning shade – well that was what cousin Dirk
remarked as he strolled up toward us. I had never seen it that way
but he was right, awnings were a binding factor, like a shelter over
your heads…
And on
that philosophical note began our discussion on awnings. I seemed
the most informed and readily gave names of some of the best awning
sites on the Internet - Sunsetter Awnings. In fact, I had bought
mine against a $200
Sunsetter Awning discount coupon from from coupon-b.net. It was
pretty late when we wound up. I was one of the last to go inside and
as I got up to go, I turned and had one last look at my awning and
pondered on what cousin Dirk had said…
